Verses in Vogue with the Vulgar

Perry's victory

Perry’s Victory, with a text beginning “Ye tars of Columbia, give ear to my story,” was not among the original set that Thomas collected, but it is now bound into the collection. The song appeared in five songsters from 1816 to 1818.

The text details the War of 1812 battle on September 10, 1813, and is a paean to Oliver Hazard Perry (see Brilliant Naval Victory). Another version of this song without an imprint is at Harvard University with a spread eagle cut and two lines of music, a variant of the old melody, “Black Joke,” at the top.
