                Ye <name type ="symbolic">Tars</name> of <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name>, give ear to my story,<lb/>
                Who fought with brave <name type ="historical">Perry</name>, where cannons did roar;<lb/>
                Your valor has gain'd you an immortal glory<lb/>
                A fame that shall last until time is no more.<lb/>
                <name type ="symbolic">Columbian tars</name> are the true son s of <name type ="mythological">Mars</name>,<lb/>
                They rake for and aft, when they fight on the deep;<lb/>
                On the bed of <placeName>Lake Erie</placeName>, commanded by <name type ="historical">Perry</name>,<lb/>
                They caus'd many <name type ="nationality">Britons</name> to take their last sleep.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The <date>Tenth of September</date> let us all remember,<lb/>
                So long as the Globe on her axis rolls round;<lb/>
                Our <name type ="symbolic">tars</name> and <name type="titled">marines</name> on <placeName>Lake Erie</placeName> were seen,<lb/>
                To make the proud flag of <placeName>Great Britain</placeName> come down.<lb/>
                The van of our fleet, the <name type ="nationality">British</name> to meet,<lb/>
                Commanded by <name type ="historical">Perry</name>, the <name type ="ship">Lawrence</name> bore down;<lb/>
                Her guns they did roar, with such terrific power,<lb/>
                That <name type ="symbolic">savages</name> trembled at the dreadful sound.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The <name type ="ship">Lawrence</name> sustain'd a most dreadful fire,<lb/>
                She fought three to one, for two glasses or more;<lb/>
                Whilst <name type ="historical">Perry</name> undaunted did firmly stand by her,<lb/>
                The proud foe on her heavy broadsides did pour:<lb/>
                Her masts being shatter'd, her rigging all tatter'd,<lb/>
                Her booms and her yards being all shot away;<lb/>
                And few left on deck to manage the wreck,<lb/>
                Our hero on board her no longer could stay.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                In this situation, the pride of our nation<lb/>
                Sure heaven had guarded unhurt all the while,<lb/>
                While many a hero, maintaining his station,<lb/>
                Fell close by his side, and was thrown on the pile.<lb/>
                But mark you and wonder, when elements thunder,<lb/>
                When death and destruction are stalking all round;<lb/>
                His flag he did carry on board the <name type ="ship">Niagara</name>,<lb/>
                Such valor on record was never yet found.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                There is one gallant act of our noble <name type ="titled">commander</name>,<lb/>
                While writing my song I must notice with pride;<lb/>
                While launch'd in the smack that carried the standard,<lb/>
                A ball whistled thro' her just close by his side.<lb/>
                Savs <name type ="historical">Perry,</name> "the rascals intend for to drown us,<lb/>
                But push on, my brave boys, you need never fear!"<lb/>
                And with his own coat he plugg'd up the boat,<lb/>
                And thro' fire and sulphur away he did steer.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The fam'd <name type ="ship">Niagara</name>, now proud of her <name type ="historical">Perry</name>,<lb/>
                Display'd all her banners in gallant array,<lb/>
                And twenty-five guns on her deck she did carry,<lb/>
                Which soon put an end to this bloody affray.<lb/>

                The rear of our fleet was brought up complete,<lb/>
                The signal was given to break thro' the line,<lb/>
                While starboard and larboard, and from ev'ry quarter,<lb/>
                The lamps of <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name> did gloriously shine.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The bold <name type="nationality">British</name> Lion roar'd out his last thunder,<lb/>
                When <name type="historical">Perry</name> attacked him close in the rear;<lb/>
                <name type ="symbolic">Columbia's</name> Eagle soon made him crouch under,<lb/>
                And roar out for quarter, as soon you shall hear.<lb/>
                Oh, had you been there, I vow and declare,<lb/>
                Such a sight as you never had seen before,<lb/>
                Six red bloody flags that no longer could wag,<lb/>
                All lay at the feet of our brave <name type="titled">Commodore</name>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Brave <name type="historical">Elliot</name>, whose valor must now be recorded,<lb/>
                On board the <name type ="ship">Niagara</name> so well play'd his part,<lb/>
                His gallant assistance to <name type="historical">Perry</name> afforded,<lb/>
                We'll place him the second on <placeName>Lake Erie's</placeName> chart.<lb/>
                In the midst of the battle, when guns they did rattle,<lb/>
                The <name type ="ship">Lawrence</name> a wreck and the men most all slain,<lb/>
                Away he did steer and brought up the rear,<lb/>
                And by this manœuvre the victory was gain'd.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Oh! had you but seen those noble commanders,<lb/>
                Embracing each other when the conflict was o'er,<lb/>
                And viewing all those invincible standards,<lb/>
                That never had yielded to any before.<lb/>
                Says <name type="historical">Perry</name>, brave <name type="historical">Elliot</name> come give me your hand, sir,<lb/>
                This day you have gain'd an immortal renown,<lb/>
                So long as <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name> <placeName>Lake Erie</placeName> commands, sir,<lb/>
                Let brave <name type="titled">Captain</name> <name type="historical">Elliot</name> with laurels be crown'd.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                <placeName>Great Britain</placeName> may boast of her conquering heroes,<lb/>
                Her <name type="historical">Rodneys</name>, her <name type="historical">Nelsons</name> and all the whole crew,<lb/>
                But none in their glory have told such a story,<lb/>
                Nor boasted such feats ss <name type ="symbolic">Columbians</name> do.<lb/>
                The whole <name type="nationality">British</name> fleet was captured complete,<lb/>
                Not one single vessel from us got away;<lb/>
                And prisoners some hundreds, <name type ="symbolic">Columbians</name> wondered<lb/>
                To see them all anchor'd and moor'd in our bay.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                May heaven still smile on the shades of our heroes,<lb/>
                Who fought in that conflict their country to save,<lb/>
                And check the proud spirit of those murdering bravoes<lb/>
                Who wish to divide us and make us all slaves.<lb/>
                <name type ="symbolic">Columbians</name> sing and make the woods ring,<lb/>
                We'll toast those brave heroes by sea and by land,<lb/>
                While <name type="nationality">Britons</name> drink cherry, <name type ="symbolic">Columbians</name> <name type="historical">Perry</name>;<lb/>
                We'll toast them about with full glass in hand.<lb/></p>
