The Details:

James Frothingham Hunnewell. A Catalogue of Books Belonging to James F. Hunnewell, of Charlestown, Mass. Cambridge, Massachusetts: The Riverside Press, April 1873.

Gift of James Melville Hunnewell, 1946.

The Story:

James F. Hunnewell documented his collecting in numerous privately issued publications. This is Hunnewell’s working copy of his first library catalogue, printed in 1873 in fifty copies.  Titles inadvertently omitted were added by hand, in red ink.  Then, each year additions were neatly noted, first in black ink, then in blue. By 1888, Hunnewell’s library tallied 5,400 volumes.
