In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 8 > Welch > Book of Nouns

The Details:

The Book of Nouns, or, Things Which May Be Seen. Philadelphia: J. Johnson, 1802. [catalog record]

Bequest of d’Alté A. Welch, 1970.

The Story:

This, the only known copy of this early American miniature picture book, is unusual for its secular subject. The text and illustrations introduce everyday words relating to farming, trades, and urban life. As a careful collector, Welch made protective covers for his books, shown nearby. The typed card was used by Welch as he compiled his Bibliography of American Children’s Books Printed Prior to 1821, published by AAS in 1972.
