The Details:

The Renowned History of Giles Gingerbread, a Little Boy who Lived upon Learning. Worcester: Isaiah Thomas, 1786. [catalog record]

Helen & Benjamin Tighe Collection of American Children’s Books, the gift of Elisabeth Ball, 1969.

The Story:

This extremely well-used chapbook is the only known copy of the first Isaiah Thomas printing of Giles Gingerbread. The work was originally issued in London by famed children’s book publisher John Newbery, who probably also wrote the text. Like most Isaiah Thomas children’s chapbooks in the Society’s collection, this one was acquired in the twentieth century.
