In Pursuit of a Vision > Case 5 > Swann > Illustrated Catalog

The Details:

American Art Association. Illustrated Catalogue of New Jersey Memorabilia … Comprising the Extensive Library of the Late William Nelson … to be Sold on November 22-23, 1915 New York: American Art Association, 1915.

Gift Arthur Swann, 1933.

The Story:

Arthur Swann gave AAS his annotated American Art Association catalogues and also arranged the gift of auctioneer Thomas E. Kirby’s marked set (shown here in reproduction). Together they allow one to recreate the complex world of early twentieth-century book auctions.

Here Swann’s copy of the Nelson sale records both advance and winning bids. Kirby’s copy contains the auctioneer’s confidential pre-sale estimate, the circled number is the opening bid and the large number is the winning bid. AAS secured 15 lots at this sale.
