The Story:
In 1813 William Bentley Fowle, then a young bookseller, began to help his uncle, William Bentley, acquire books. Creating a vade mecum, Fowle transcribed the names of authors and editions listed in Thomas Frognall Dibdin’s An Introduction to the Knowledge of Rare and Valuable Edition sof the Greek and Latin Classics (London, 1808) into a blank book. The volume was acquired by the Society at auction in 1992.
