The Story:

Of the many initiatives based on the AAS collections, the longest running has been The Writings of James Fenimore Cooper.  Conceived by scholar James Franklin Beard, Jr. the project began in 1967 and teams of scholars have since produced critically edited texts for twenty-two of Cooper’s works. AAS has assembled an outstanding collection of editions of all of Cooper’s works, published up to 1877. Cooper Edition editors employ these volumes to trace the textual history of each work, and then establish a definitive text by collating multiple copies. This well-used first edition copy of The Last of the Mohicans, collated on the Society’s Hinman Collator, served as the copy-text for the 1983 critical edition. Although the book is definitely not in “collector’s condition,” it will be retained for reference.
