Cooper's manuscript, Jack Tier

Another one of Cooper's sea tales, Jack Tier is about an American ship captain who sold contraband gunpowder. The novel was first published in ten installments in Graham's Magazine from 1846 to 1848 under the title Rose Budd (as is evident in this manuscript copy). When he was almost finished with the novel, Cooper wrote to Richard Bentley in September 1846: "The story will be in ten parts, and for the short price, of course. It is nearly written, and I will take care of your rights."
