Cooper's Naval History, officially The History of the Navy of the United States of America, was published in 1839 after Cooper spent about ten years writing the book. In 1830 he wrote from Paris: "I have not forgotten the Naval History, though it gets on but slowly, on account of the impossibility of finding Documents here." Displayed here is the preface and Cooper's illustration of the advance of forces against Plattsburgh during the War of 1812.
