Young America's ABC and Pretty Picture Book - Among the picture books scanned by Applewood Books was Young America’s ABC and Pretty Picture Book (New York: McLoughlin Bros., 1900) [record].  Its colorful chromolithographs celebrate “American” youth with its depiction of young boys playing soldier. This allusion to the Spanish-American War recently won by the United States reflects the nation’s new role as a military power on the international stage. Gift of Herbert H. Hosmer, 1978.
