The Kentucky Mummy - The so-called Kentucky Mummy entered the Society’s collections in 1816. It was exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia and returned to the Society. After the mummy was exhibited in Chicago at the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, it was presented to the Smithsonian Institution. The inscription on the back of the carte de visite indicates that this is the “Photograph of a Female Mummy Taken from the ‘Mammoth Cave’ in Kentucky in October 1815 by Nahum Ward of Marietta, Ohio. The Mummy in the Rooms of the ‘Antiquarian Society,’ Worcester, Mass. Compliments of William S. Ward, Marietta, Ohio (Now in Smithsonian Institution).” Cadwallader’s Fine Art Gallery, Front St., Marietta, Ohio.
