Casares family members with Stephen Salisbury III - Stephen Salisbury III with visitors from Mérida, Mexico, David Casares and four members of his family. The woman standing at right is Sarah Reed Lawton. Although Salisbury lived in Worcester as a wealthy and unmarried man, he had a long, private relationship with Mrs. Lawton, who was separated from her husband and supported herself by giving music lessons and operating a boarding house. She became a friend of the Casares family, visiting them in Mexico in November 1886 and hosting young members who came to Worcester to learn English or attend college. At his death in 1905, Salisbury left Mrs. Lawton a substantial bequest that was reported in the Worcester and New York City press.
