Order of Performances at the Fourth Anniversary of the American Antiquarian Society, October 23, 1816- The address by William Bentley, an appeal to integrate the antiquarians’ interest in the history “of kindred and country” into the education of youth in schools and universities, was lost from view for many years. The text was sought for publication immediately following its delivery at the Society’s fourth anniversary, but without success. Bentley died in 1819 and many of his papers were bequeathed to the Society; the manuscript finally reached the library in 1865 as part of a later bequest of papers. At the Society’s centennial in 1912, a volume of the Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society was published that brought together the Society’s meeting records from 1812 to October 1849, when the consecutive publication began.
