Verses in Vogue with the Vulgar

Madison's victory

“Madison’s Victory” is a Democratic-Republican election victory song that reviews the successes of the American Navy and calls on Washington’s memory to fight “for our rights.” It is of the same model as Truxton’s Victory and particularly Naval Victory, with the same “my brave Yankee boys” burden for which no period tune has been located. It was written after the election of 1812 in which President Madison was elected to a second term—“For Madison he has the gain, the President’s chair he will maintain.” Party strife seems to have calmed somewhat by this time; songs are more nationalistic than politically oriented. The era of “good feelings” that characterized the second decade had begun.
