Verses in Vogue with the Vulgar

The Battle between the Chesapeake and Shannon

This third text on the battle between Chesapeake and Shannon, fought on June 1, 1813, is in broadside style (see also Written and Corrected by James Campbell and Chesapeake and Shannon). It reviews the facts, describing the weather, the decks being cleared for action, and the death of the captain in rather matter-of-fact terms. The last four verses are promotion for the navy, with the final rather cold reminder that pensions are given to the wounded.
