        <body>
            <p>
                YOU parents that have children dear,<lb/>
                To what I shall relate give ear;<lb/>
                In <placeName>Barnet</placeName> liv'd a loving pair,<lb/>
                A tender wife and husband dear,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Whom cruel death of life beguil'd,<lb/>
                He left his tender wife with child;<lb/>
                Improv'd a daughter, therefore she<lb/>
                Was brought up very tenderly;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                And as she did grow up in time,<lb/>
                Her temper was like one divine;<lb/>
                So sweet, so modest and so fair<lb/>
                That few with her they could compare.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                And when her words her silence broke,<lb/>
                You would have thought an angel spoke.<lb/>
                She was her mother's darling bright,<lb/>
                In learning she took great delight;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                'Bove all the rest her mind was given,<lb/>
                To find the ready way to heaven:<lb/>
                If she one penny had in store,<lb/>
                She'd freely give it to the poor.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                As this child came from school one day,<lb/>
                She saw some children at their play;<lb/>
                And wickedly they did blaspheme,<lb/>
                And took <name type ="mythological">God's</name> holy name in vain;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                She said dear children, pray forbear,<lb/>
                What makes you thus to curse and swear;<lb/>
                At school you never learnt the same,<lb/>
                Therefore I think you're much to blame;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Besides, what will your parents say,<lb/>
                When they do hear you go astray,<lb/>
                I'm sure their hearts would troubled be,<lb/>
                To know you live so wickedly,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Remember every sinful word<lb/>
                You'll answer for before the <name type ="mythological">Lord</name>.<lb/>
                Then started up a little elf,<lb/>
                Saying, dear Miss, pray mind yourself;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                We'll lead our lives this merry way,<lb/>
                In spite of what you do or say,<lb/>
                We value not our parents dear,<lb/>
                The church we never will draw near;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                For there's no heaven to enter in,<lb/>
                Nor hell to punish folks for sin,<lb/>
                A gentleman hath told us so,<lb/>
                Who gave us money so to do;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                So hold your tongue and don't us teaze,<lb/>
                For, madam, we'll do what we please.<lb/>
                The pretty maiden weeping said,<lb/>
                It was the devil I'm afraid,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Who bade you <name type="mythological">God's</name> commandments brake<lb/>
                That he your precious souls might take.<lb/>
                But dear companions pray take care,<lb/>
                You fall not in this woful snare,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Take this advice I do implore,<lb/>
                Or else I'll ne'er come near you more,<lb/>
                One taking this in great disgrace,<lb/>
                Did strike her on her pretty face,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Saying, dear Miss, pray hence depart,<lb/>
                We scorn you from our very heart.<lb/>
                This pretty maid weeping did say,<lb/>
                Though you do strike me I will pray,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                That your poor souls in heaven dwell,<lb/>
                And so I bid you all farewell.<lb/>

                Tears from her cheeks in streams did glide,<lb/>
                Her mother ask'd her why she cry'd,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                What did your mistress you chastise;<lb/>
                That you come home with weeping eyes?<lb/>
                No, mother dear (this child did say)<lb/>
                Some children I have seen this day,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Who will not <name type ="mythological">God's</name> commandment keep,<lb/>
                It is for their poor souls I weep;<lb/>
                When I them blamed for their oath,<lb/>
                They gave me many bitter blows;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                But let them do whate'er they will,<lb/>
                Their precious souls I'll pray for still,<lb/>
                Her mother took her in her arms,<lb/>
                My dear, <name type ="mythological">God</name> keep you from all harms,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Don't weep, my child nor be distress'd<lb/>
                They'll answer for their wickedness.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                As this child went to school one day,<lb/>
                Through the church-yard she took her way<lb/>
                Where lo! the devil came and said,<lb/>
                Where are you going pretty maid?<lb/></p>

            <p>
                To school I'm going, sir said she,<lb/>
                No child, don't mind the same said he,<lb/>
                But hasten to your playmates dear,<lb/>
                Who learn to lie and curse and swear,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                They bravely spend their time in play,<lb/>
                <name type ="mythological">God</name> they don't care for, no not they!<lb/>
                It is a fable, child, he cry'd,<lb/>
                At which his cloven foot she spy'd,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                I'm sure there is a <name type ="mythological">God</name>, said she,<lb/>
                That from your power will keep me free,<lb/>
                And if this thing you do deny,<lb/>
                Your cloven foot gives you the lie:<lb/></p>

            <p>
                <name type ="mythological">Satan</name> avoid hence out of hand,<lb/>
                In the name of <name type ="religious">Jesus</name>, I command:<lb/>
                At which the devil instantly,<lb/>
                In flames of fire away did fly,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Soon after came an angel fair,<lb/>
                Saying to her why weep'st my dear,<lb/>
                Why doth your time, now swiftly run,<lb/>
                Or is it death you look upon?<lb/></p>

            <p>
                If it be so, be not beguil'd,<lb/>
                You only die, to live my child.<lb/>
                At which the pretty harmless maid,<lb/>
                Then to the shining angel said,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Dear sir, I'm not afraid of death,<lb/>
                For if <name type ="mythological">God</name> takes me from this earth,<lb/>
                <name type ="mythological">Satan</name> would then cease to torment<lb/>
                A harmless child and innocent:<lb/></p>

            <p>
                O sir, he was here but just now,<lb/>
                Without <name type ="mythological">God's</name> help what shall I do,<lb/>
                But heaven I hope will hear my prayers,<lb/>
                And dry my cheeks fsom weeping tears.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The angel took her by the hand,<lb/>
                My dear I came by heaven's command,<lb/>
                To comfort you in this sad hour.<lb/>
                That <name type ="mythological">Satan</name> should not have the power,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                To tempt you more while you have breath,<lb/>
                Too good you are to live on earth,<lb/>
                But my dear child, continue on,<lb/>
                In heaven for you there is a throne;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Where <name type ="religious">Christ</name> doth sit in glory bright:<lb/>
                In such as you he takes delight:<lb/>

                May his blessing on you remain,<lb/>
                So farewell till we meet again.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                This pretty maiden strait went home,<lb/>
                And told her mother all she'd done,<lb/>
                Who wept full sore, she did foresee<lb/>
                Her child would not long with her stay,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                In a month's time she did complain,<lb/>
                That she did feel tormenting pain,<lb/>
                The doctors sent for were with speed,<lb/>
                To help this child in time of need,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Her sickness it was most severe,<lb/>
                But yet this pretty harmless dear,<lb/>
                Would seldom groan or make complaint:<lb/>
                But seemed like a dying saint.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                And when the doctors gave her o'er.<lb/>
                Nothing could grieve this dear child more,<lb/>
                Than when her mother's tears she spyd',<lb/>
                Dear mother for me do not cry:<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Come kiss your child, and don't complain,<lb/>
                We only part to meet again:<lb/>
                My soul seems in a cage to be,<lb/>
                But death I hope will set it free.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                To my companions tell this truth,<lb/>
                To serve the <name type ="mythological">Lord</name> in time of Youth:<lb/>
                That their poor souls may be forgiven,<lb/>
                And when they die may go to heaven.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Thus spake the dying infant dear,<lb/>
                When lo! the ANGEL did appear,<lb/>
                Have mercy <name type ="mythological">Lord</name>, she then did cry,<lb/>
                And comfort me before I die.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Look mother dear, I pray behold<lb/>
                My shining angel bright as gold,<lb/>
                Where is he child? I can't him see,<lb/>
                O! there he is, 'tis he, 'tis he,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Speak lovely angel, take me hence,<lb/>
                Thy words excel all eloquence,<lb/>
                Sweet child, says he, thy days are done,<lb/>
                Thy minutes fly, thy glass is run.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                I'm coming <name type ="mythological">Lord</name>, this child did say,<lb/>
                Dont weep, dont weep, dear mother pray,<lb/>
                My soul seem'd in a cage to be,<lb/>
                But death is come to set it free,<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Methinks I hear my passing bell,<lb/>
                My friends all taking their farewell.<lb/>
                Sweet <name type ="mythological">LORD</name> receive my souls she said,<lb/>
                Thus died this pretty harmless maid;<lb/></p>

            <p>
                When lo! was heard a charming sound,<lb/>
                As if a saint in heaven was crown'd,<lb/>
                And at her funeral heard was there,<lb/>
                Sweet heavenly music in the air.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The people wept for this dear child,<lb/>
                She was so heavenly, meek and mild,<lb/>
                But <name type ="mythological">GOD</name> has made her now his own,<lb/>
                Where <name type ="mythological">satan's</name> power can not be shown.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                YOU children who live piously,<lb/>
                Like her, you'll also like her die;<lb/>
                <name type ="mythological">GOD</name> will you bless while here on earth,<lb/>
                And make you happy after death.<lb/></p>
