            <p>
                WHEN I was young and in my<lb/>
                prime,<lb/>
                I'd neither thought, nor care,<lb/>
                I took delight in mirth and wine,<lb/>
                And rov'd from fair to fair:<lb/>
                I took delight in jovial life,<lb/>
                'Till fate on me did frown:<lb/>
                Until alas! I got a wife,<lb/>
                And the world turn'd upside down.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                What happy golden days were these,<lb/>
                When I was in my prime?<lb/>
                The lasses took delight in me,<lb/>
                I was so neat and fine;<lb/>
                I rov'd about from fair to fair,<lb/>
                Likewise from town to town:<lb/>
                Until I married me a wife,<lb/>
                And the world turn'd upside down.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                My master sent me out one day,<lb/>
                To get a load of hay,<lb/>
                I met a friend upon the road,<lb/>
                Who caused me to stay;<lb/>
                Before we'd drunk one flaggon out,<lb/>
                My wife came up to town;<lb/>
                And there she made a doleful rout,<lb/>
                And the world turn'd upside down.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Like thunder was the dismal song,<lb/>
                She rattled in my ear;<lb/>
                I begg'd of her to hold her tongue,<lb/>
                But that she would not bear:<lb/>
                For then she took the flaggon up,<lb/>
                And with it crack'd my crown;<lb/>
                Then I durst neither speak nor look;<lb/>
                Oh the world turn'd upside down.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                As I went to the mill one day,<lb/>
                I met with honest <name type ="historical">Joan</name>,<lb/>
                And as we rode along the way,<lb/>
                To her I made my moan;<lb/>
                My wife came with a doleful curse,<lb/>
                And call'd me silly clown,<lb/>
                Which made the matter worse and worse,<lb/>
                Oh the world turn'd upside down.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                So then I lugg'd her by the ears,<lb/>
                And both her sides did baste;<lb/>

                I thresh'd her sore, wth cudgel till<lb/>
                Her strength began to waste;<lb/>
                She since doth yield to my consent,<lb/>
                And ne'er does on me frown:<lb/>
                So now she lives in sweet content;<lb/>
                And the world is right side down.<lb/></p>

                Near the murmurs of a fountain,<lb/>
                Where the chrystal waters flow;<lb/>
