        <body>
<p>John Bull, who has for ten years past,<lb/> Been daily growing prouder,<lb/> Has got
                another taste at last,<lb/> Of <placeName>Yankee </placeName>ball and powder<lb/>
<placeName>Yankee</placeName> doodle join the tune,<lb/> To every freeman
handy,<lb/> Let's shake the foot and rigadoon,<lb/> To yankee doodle dandy<lb/></p>
<p>His wrongs and insults have increas'd<lb/> Till <placeName>yankees</placeName> cannot
bear 'em,<lb/> And as they wish d to live in peace,<lb/> He thought that he could
                scare 'em;<lb/> But <placeName>yankees</placeName> know their <emph rend="italic"
                    >good old tune</emph>, <lb/> For fun or fighting handy,<lb/> For battle or for
                rigadoon,<lb/> 'Tis yankee doodle dandy.<lb/></p>
            <p>You all remember well, I guess,<lb/> The <rs type="ship">CHESAPEAKE</rs>
                disaster<lb/> When <persName>Britons</persName> dar'd to kill and press,<lb/> To
please their royal master,<lb/> That day did murder'd freemen fall,<lb/> Their
graves are cold and sandy;<lb/> Their funeral dirge was sung by all;<lb/> Not yankee
                doodle dandy.<lb/></p>
<p>But still for this we mann'd no ship,<lb/> But used expostulation,<lb/> They murder'd
<persName>PIERCE</persName> -they fired on <persName>TRIP</persName>,<lb/> We
bore the degradation,<lb/> For though we can like devils fight,<lb/> Yet peaceful
joys are handy ;<lb/> Like brothers still, we would unite,<lb/> With yankee doodle
                dandy.<lb/></p>
<p>The tools of <persName>British</persName> power who steal<lb/> And murder on the
ocean,<lb/> For every wrong they make us feel,<lb/> Meet honour and promotion<lb/> I
guess if father was not dead,<lb/> He'd think us very blandy,<lb/> And ask where all
the fire had fled<lb/> Of yankee doodle dandy.<lb/></p>
<p>But finding injuries prolong'd<lb/> Becoming a growing evil,<lb/>Our Commodore got
leave, if wrong'd,<lb/> To blow'em to the devil,<lb/></p>
            <p>And <persName>RODGERS</persName>is a spunky lad,<lb/> In naval battles handy,<lb/>
'Twas he who whipp'd the <persName>Turks</persName> sir,<lb/> With yankee doodle
                dandy.<lb/></p>
<p>So off he goes, and tells his crew,<lb/> The sails we quickly bent sir ;<lb/> A
                better ship you never knew,<lb/> She's call'd the <rs type="ship">PRESIDENT</rs>
sir,<lb/> They hoisted up the topsails soon,<lb/> The sailors are so handy;<lb/>
While drums and fifes struck up the tune<lb/> Of yankee doodle dandy.<lb/></p>
            <p>On <date>Thursday</date> morn, we saw a sail,<lb/> Well arm'd with gun and
swivel,<lb/> Says <persName>RODGERS</persName>, "We will chase and hail<lb/> And see
if she'll be civil."<lb/> So after her they hasten'd soon,<lb/> The chase soon
brought her handy,<lb/> While drums and fifes still play'd the tune,<lb/> Call'd
                yankee doodle dandy.<lb/></p>
<p>"Where are you from?" bold <persName>RODGERS</persName> cried<lb/> Which made the
<persName>British</persName> wonder-<lb/> Then with a gun they quick
replied,<lb/> Which made a noise like thunder,<lb/> Like lightening we return'd the
joke,<lb/> Our matches were so handy,<lb/> The <placeName>yankee
bull-dog</placeName> nobly spoke,<lb/> The tune of doodle dandy/<lb/></p>
<p>A brilliant action then began,<lb/> Our fire so briskly burn'd sir,<lb/> While blood
                from British scuppers ran,<lb/> Like <emph rend="italic">seventy-six</emph> return'd
                sir.<lb/> Our cannon roar'd, our men huzza'd,<lb/> And fir'd away so handy,<lb/>
Till <persName>Bingham</persName> struck, he was so scar'd,<lb/> At hearing doodle
                dandy.<lb/></p>
<p>Then having thus chastis'd the foe,<lb/> And wounded thirty British,<lb/> We gave the
rascals leave to go,<lb/> They felt so deuced skittish.<lb/> Now toast our Commodore
so brave,<lb/> In toddy, flip, or brandy,<lb/> And strike aloud the merry stave<lb/>
                Of yankee doodle dandy.<lb/></p>
