                <p> Hark! 'tis the children of <name type="historical">WASHINGTON</name>, pouring<lb/>
                The full tide of song to the conqueror's praise<lb/>
                Whose brows our young eagle, triumphantly soaring<lb/>
                From the dun smoke of battle, encircled with bays.<lb/>
                And while the choral song<lb/>
                Floats on the air along<lb/>
                Blending the tones of the mellowing strain,<lb/>
                Bright o'er the melting soul<lb/>
                New scenes of glory roll,<lb/>
                Glory that spreads its broad blaze o'er the main.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Hail to the brave, who in language of thunder,<lb/>
                Borne on the foam-crested billows to war,<lb/>
                Claim of their foe no inglorious plunder,-<lb/>
                The trident of <name type="mythological">Neptune</name> and victory's car.<lb/>
                And while <name type ="symbolic">Columbia's</name> stars<lb/>
                Wave o'er her gallant <name type ="symbolic">tars</name>,<lb/>
                Bounding in triumph along the blue deep;<lb/>
                See, o'er the bloody wave,<lb/>
                Many a <name type="nationality">Briton's</name> grave,<lb/>
                The proud queen of ocean disconsolate weep.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Hail to yon orient star, that adorning<lb/>
                And gilding the skies with its ravishing light,<lb/>
                Blazes unquench'd on the forehead of morning,<lb/>
                And dispels the cold gloom of oppression and night.<lb/>
                'Tis by that ruddy glow<lb/>
                Slaves and their tyrant know<lb/>
                Freedom and hope to the world have return'd;<lb/>
                So shone the pilot star,<lb/>
                Hail'd from the east afar<lb/>
                That over the manger of <placeName>Bethlehem</placeName> burn'd.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Peace to the dust that in silence reposes<lb/>
                Beneath the dark boughs of the cypress and yew;<lb/>
                Let Spring deck the spot with her earliest roses,<lb/>
                And Heav'n wash their leaves in its holiest dew.<lb/>
                Calm as the Hero's soul<lb/>
                Let the <placeName>Potomac</placeName> roll<lb/>
                Wat'ring the willow that over him weeps,<lb/>
                And, from his glassy wave,<lb/>
                Softly reflect the grave<lb/>
                Where all that was mortal of <name type="historical">WASHINGTON</name> sleeps.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Hail holy shade! we would proudly inherit<lb/>
                The flame that once deign'd in thy bosom to glow<lb/>
                While yet but one spark of thy patriot spirit<lb/>
                Thy godlike benevolence lingers below.<lb/>
                Ne'er let thy fav'rite tree<lb/>
                Sacred to Liberty<lb/>
                By Anarchy's sulph'ry sirocco be riven;<lb/>
                But in immortal bloom<lb/>
                Rise o'er its planters tomb<lb/>
                Rich with perfume as the breezes of Heaven.<lb/></p>

                And guard our native land;<lb/>

                That learnt from thee to glow?<lb/>
                On our shore, seen no more,<lb/>
                CHORUS.<lb/>

                For here thy sacred mem'ry lives;<lb/>
                Here grateful bosoms glow;<lb/>
                And thy name lights a flame,<lb/>
