                A MAIDEN I was at the age of sixteen,<lb/>
                From my parents run away and a<lb/>
                soldier I became;<lb/>
                I listed in a regiment, a drummer I become,<lb/>
                Where I learned for to beat upon my rub<lb/>
                a-dub a_dum.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                My hat, cap and feather, if you had but<lb/>
                seen,<lb/>
                A noble <name type ="titled">duke of <placeName>York</placeName></name> at the siege of <placeName>Al-<lb/>
                    lenseine</placeName>;<lb/>
                The drum boys all admired me, my fingers<lb/>
                neat and small,<lb/>
                I could beat upon my drum a-drum the best<lb/>
                of them all.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Many is the prank I have play'd in the field,<lb/>
                And many a proud <name type ="nationality">Frenchman</name> I caus'd for<lb/>
                to yield;<lb/>
                My officers they guarded me for fear I<lb/>
                should be slain,<lb/>
                And they sent me to old <placeName>England</placeName> recruiting<lb/>
                back again.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Every night when to my quarters I came,<lb/>
                To lie with a soldier I was not asham'd;<lb/>
                When pulling off my small clothes, to my-<lb/>
                self did often smile,<lb/>
                To think I lay with a soldier, a maid all<lb/>
                the while.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                They sent me up to <placeName>London</placeName> to keep guard<lb/>
                over the tower,<lb/>
                Or I should have been a maid until this<lb/>
                very day and hour.<lb/>
                A lady fell in love with me, I told her I was<lb/>
                a maid,<lb/>
                And she unto my officer the secret betray'd.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                My officers they came to me to know if it<lb/>
                was true,<lb/>
                I said sir, what you ask me, I cannot deny<lb/>
                to you;<lb/>
                He smil'd at me and said, my pretty maid,<lb/>
                It is a pity that we should loose such a<lb/>
                drummer as you made.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                For your good behaviour at the siege of<lb/>
                <placeName>Allenseine</placeName>,<lb/>
                A bounty shall on you be laid by our noble<lb/>
                queen.<lb/>
                And now I have a husband, a drummer he's<lb/>
                become,<lb/>
                And I learn him for to beat upon my rub<lb/>
                a-dub, a dum.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Here is a health to me, and another to you,<lb/>
                And every young man that sticks to his<lb/>
                colours true;<lb/>
                And if the <name type ="titled">Duke</name> is short of men before he<lb/>
                should be slain,<lb/>
                So boldly I would march away and fight<lb/>
                for him again.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The Blue Bell of <placeName>Scotland</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                OH where, and oh where is your high-<lb/>
                land laddie gone?<lb/>
                He's gone to fight the <name type ="nationality">French</name> for <name type ="titled">king</name><lb/>
                <name type ="historical">George</name> upon the throne,<lb/>
                And its oh in my heart I wish him safe at<lb/>

            <p>
                Oh! where, and oh where did your high-<lb/>
                land laddie dwell?<lb/>
                He dwelt in merry <placeName>Scotland</placeName> at the sign of<lb/>
                the Blue Bell,<lb/>
                And its oh in my heart I love my laddie well<lb/></p>

            <p>
                In what clothes, in what clothes is your<lb/>
                highland laddie clad?<lb/>
                His bonnet's of the Sexton green, and his<lb/>
                waistcoat's of the plaid,<lb/>
                And its oh in my heart I love my highland<lb/>
                lad.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Suppose, and suppose that your highland<lb/>
                lad should die!<lb/>
                The bagpipes should play over him, and<lb/>
                I'd sit me down and cry,<lb/>
                And its oh in my heart I wish he may not die.<lb/></p>
