        <body>

            <p>
            Why should vain mortals tremble at the sight of<lb />
            Death and destruction in the field of battle,<lb />
            Where blood and carnage clothe the ground in crimson,<lb />
            Sounding with death groans?<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Death will invade us by the means appointed,<lb />
            And we must all bow to the king of terrors;<lb />
            Nor am I anxious, if I am prepared,<lb />
            What shape he comes in.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Infinite goodness teaches us submission;<lb />
            Bids us be quiet under all his dealings:<lb />
            Never repining, but forever praising<lb />
            <name type ="mythological">God</name> our Creator.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Well may we praise him - all his ways are perfect;<lb />
            Though a resplendence, infinitely glowing,<lb />
            Dazzles in glory on the sight of mortals<lb />
            Struck blind by lustre.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Good is <name type ="mythological">Jehovah</name> in bestowing sun-shine,<lb />
            Nor less his goodness in the storm &amp; thunder,<lb />
            Mercies and judgments both proceed from kindness;<lb />
            Infinite kindness.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            O then exult, that <name type ="mythological">God</name> forever reigneth;<lb />
            Clouds, which around him hinder our preception,<lb />
            Bind us the stronger to exalt his name, and<lb />
            Shout louder praises,<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Then to the wisdom of my <name type ="mythological">Lord</name> and Master,<lb />
            I will commit all that I have or wish for;<lb />
            Sweetly as babes sleep will I give my life up<lb />
            When call'd to yield it. <lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Now, <name type ="mythological">Mars</name>, I dare thee, clad in smoky pillars,<lb />
            Bursting from bomb-shells, roaring from the cannon,<lb />
            Rattling in grape shot, like a storm of hailstones,<lb />
            Torturing æther!<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            The <name type ="nationality">American</name> Hero.<lb />
            Made on the battle of <placeName>Bunker-Hill</placeName>, and the burning of <placeName>Charlestown</placeName>.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Up the bleak heavens let the spreading flames rife,<lb />
            Breaking like <name type ="mythological">Ætna</name> thro'the smoky columns,<lb />
            Low'ring like <placeName>Egypt</placeName> o'er the falling city,<lb />
            Wantonly burnt down.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            While all their hearts quick palpitate for havoc,<lb />
            Let slip your blood hounds, nam'd the <name type ="nationality">British</name> lions,<lb />
            Dauntless as death stares; nimble as the whirlwind;<lb />
            Dreadful as demons.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Let oceans waft on all your floating castles,<lb />
            Fraught with destruction, horrible to nature;<lb />
            Then with your sails fill'd by a storm of vengeance,<lb />
            Bear down to battle!<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            From the dire caverns made by ghostly miners,<lb />
            Let the explosion, dreadful as volcanoes,<lb />
            Heave the broad town, with all its wealth and people,<lb />
            Quick to destruction.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Still shall the banners of the <name type ="titled">King</name> of heaven<lb />
            Never advance where I'm afraid to follow;<lb />
            While that preceds me, with an open bosom,<lb />
            War, I defy thee.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Fame and dear freedom lure me on to battle,<lb />
            While a fell despot, grimer than a death's head,<lb />
            Stings me with serpents, fiercer than <name type ="mythological">Medusa's</name><lb />
            To the encounter.<lb />
            </p>

            <p>
            Life for my country, and the cause of freedom,<lb />
            Is but a trifle for a worm to part with;<lb />
            And if preserved in so great a contest,<lb />
            Life is redoubled.<lb />
