            <p>
                WHEN <name type ="symbolic">Columbia's</name> brave sons sought my hero to<lb/>
                lead them,<lb/>
                To vanquish their foes and establish their freedom,<lb/>
                I rejoic'd at his honors, my fears I dissembled,<lb/>
                At the thought of his dangers my heart how it<lb/>
                trembled,<lb/>
                Oh, my <name type ="historical">Washington</name>! Oh, my <name type ="historical">Washington</name> <lb/>
                Oh, my <name type ="historical">washington</name>! all was hazardous.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The contest decided, with foes to the nation,<lb/>
                My hero return'd 'midst loud acclamation,<lb/>
                Of men without number and praise without measure,<lb/>
                And my own heart exulted in transports of pleasure,<lb/>
                Oh, my <name type ="historical">Washington</name>. Oh, &amp;c. all was hazardous.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Our freedom with order by faction rejected,<lb/>
                A new constitution our country elected,<lb/>
                My hero was rais'd to preside over the <name type ="symbolic">union</name>,<lb/>
                And his cares interrupted our bliss and communion.<lb/>
                Oh, my happiness! &amp;c. &amp;c. how precarious.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Declining the trust of his dignified station,<lb/>
                With joy to the seat of his dear estimation,<lb/>
                Surrounded with honors he humbly retreated,<lb/>
                Sweet hope softly whisper'd my bliss was completed.<lb/>
                Oh, my happiness! &amp;c. &amp;c. how precarious.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                When the pangs of disease, had, ah! fatally seiz'd<lb/>
                him,<lb/>
                My heart would have yielded its life to have eas'd<lb/>
                him,<lb/>
                And I pray'd the <name type ="symbolic">Most High</name> if for death he design'd<lb/>
                him,<lb/>
                That he would not permit me to loiter behind him.<lb/>
                Oh, my <name type ="historical">Washington</name>! &amp;c. &amp;c. all was dubious.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                When my hopes had all fled, and I saw him resign-<lb/>
                ing<lb/>
                His soul to his <name type ="mythological">God</name> without fear or repining,<lb/>

                What, my heart, were thy feelings? lamenting, ad-<lb/>
                miring,<lb/>
                To behold him so calmly, so nobly expiring.<lb/>
                Oh, my Washington! &amp;c. &amp;c. has forsaken us.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                When I follow'd his corpse with grief unconfined,<lb/>
                And saw to the tomb his dear relics consigned,<lb/>
                When I left him in darkness and silence surround-<lb/>
                ed,<lb/>
                With what pangs of fresh anguish my bosom was<lb/>
                wounded!<lb/>
                Oh, my <name type ="historical">Washington</name>! &amp;c. &amp;c. has forsaken us.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                An aspect so noble pale grave clothes disfigure,<lb/>
                His conquering arm is despoiled of its vigour,<lb/>
                On those limbs which dropt wisdom, is silence im-<lb/>
                posed,<lb/>
                And those kind beaming eyes now forever are<lb/>
                closed,<lb/>
                Oh, my <name type ="historical">Washington</name>? &amp;c. &amp;c. has forsaken us.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                When with tears of sweet musing I ponder the<lb/>
                story,<lb/>
                Of his wars, of his labours, his virtues and glory,<lb/>
                I breath'd out a pray'r with sad order of spirit,<lb/>
                Soon to join him in bliss and united inherit<lb/>
                Endless Blessedness! &amp;c. &amp;c. oh, how glorious.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                But why with my own single grief so confounded,<lb/>
                When my country's sad millions in sorrows are<lb/>
                drowned,<lb/>
                Let me mingle the current that flows from my bosom,<lb/>
                With my country's vast ocean of tears while they<lb/>
                lose them,<lb/>
                Tho' my <name type ="historical">Washington</name>, &amp;c. &amp;c. has forsaken us.<lb/></p>
