            <p>
                WHILST I relate my story, <name type ="nationality">Americans</name> give ear,<lb/>
                Of <placeName>Britain's</placeName> fading glory you presently shall hear;<lb/>
                It is a true relation, attend to what I say,<lb/>
                Concerning the taxation in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The cruel <name type ="titled">Lords</name> of <placeName>Britain</placeName>, who glory in their shame,<lb/>
                The project they had hit on they joyfully proclaim;<lb/>
                'Tis what they're striving after to take our rights away,<lb/>
                And rob us of our charter, in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                There are two mighty speakers that rule in Parliament,<lb/>
                Who always have been seekers some mischief to invent;<lb/>
                'Twas <name type ="mythological">North</name> and <name type ="mythological">Bute</name> his father, a horrid plan did lay,<lb/>
                A mighty tax to gather in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                They search'd the gloomy regions of the infernal pit,<lb/>
                To find amongst those legions one who excell'd in wit,<lb/>
                To ask of him assistance to tell them how they may<lb/>
                Subdue without resistance this <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Old Satan, the arch traitor, resolv'd a voyage to make,<lb/>
                Who rules sole navigator on the infernal lake,<lb/>
                For the <name type ="nationality">Britannic</name> ocean he launched fast away,<lb/>
                To land he had no notion in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                He'll take his seat in <placeName>Britain</placeName>, it was his soul's intent<lb/>
                Great <name type ="historical">George's</name> throne to sit on and rule the parliament;<lb/>
                His comrades were pursuing a diabolic way,<lb/>
                For to complete the ruin of <name type ="historical">North America</name>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                They tried the art of magic to bring their schemes about,<lb/>
                At length this gloomy project they artfully found out,<lb/>
                The plan was long indulg'd in a clandestine way,<lb/>
                But lately was divulged in <name type ="historical">North America</name>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                These subtle arch designers address'd the <name type ="nationality">British</name> court,<lb/>
                All three were undersigners of this obscure report,<lb/>
                There is a pleasant landscape that lieth far away,<lb/>
                Beyond the wide <placeName>Atlantic</placeName> in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                There is a wealthy people that sojourns in that land,<lb/>
                Their churches all with steeples most delicately stand,<lb/>
                Their houses like the tulip are painted red and gay,<lb/>
                They flourish like the lily in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Their land with milk and honey continually doth flow,<lb/>
                The want of food or money they seldom ever know;<lb/>
                They heap up gold and treasure, they have no debts to pay,<lb/>
                They spend their time in pleasure in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                On turkey, fowls and fishes most frequently they dine,<lb/>
                With gold and silver dishes their tables always shine,<lb/>
                They crown their feasts with butter, they eat and rise to play,<lb/>
                In silk the ladies flutter in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                With gold and silver laces they do themselves adorn,<lb/>
                The rubies deck their faces refulgent as the morn;<lb/>
                Wine sparkles in their glasses, they spend each happy day<lb/>
                In merriment and dances in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Let not our suit affront you when we address the throne,<lb/>
                O king, this wealthy country and subjects are your own,<lb/>
                And you their lawful sovereign they surely must obey,<lb/>
                You have a right to govern this <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                O king, conceive the sequel, from what we here prescribe,<lb/>
                Is it not just and equal to tax this wealthy tribe?<lb/>
                The question being asked, his Majesty did say,<lb/>
                My subject shall be taxed in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Invested with my warrant my publicans shall go,<lb/>
                The tenth of all their current they surely shall betstow;<lb/>
                If they indulge rebellion or from my precepts stray,<lb/>
                I'll send my war battalions to <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                I'll rally all my forces by water and by land,<lb/>
                My light dragoons and horsemen shall go at my command;<lb/>
                I'll burn both town and city, the smoke shall cloud the day,<lb/>
                I'll shew no human pity in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Go on, my hardy soldiers, you need not fear of ill,<lb/>
                There's <name type ="historical">Hutchinson</name> and <name type ="historical">Rogers</name>, their function will fulfil,<lb/>
                They tell such ample stories, believe them sure we may,<lb/>
                That one half will turn <name type ="symbolic">tories</name> in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                My gallant ships are ready to waft you o'er the flood,<lb/>
                Then in my cause be steady, it is supremely good!<lb/>
                Go, ravage, steal and plunder, and yours shall be the prey,<lb/>
                They quickly will knock under in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The laws I have enacted I never will revoke,<lb/>
                Although they are neglected my fury to provoke;<lb/>
                I will forbear to flatter, but rule with mighty sway;<lb/>
                I'll take away the charter from <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                O <name type ="historical">George</name>, you are distracted, by sad experience find,<lb/>
                The laws you have enacted are of the blackest kind;<lb/>
                I'll make a short digression and tell you by the way,<lb/>
                We fear not your oppression in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Our fathers were distressed while in their native land,<lb/>
                By tyrants were oppressed, as we do understand;<lb/>
                For freedom and religion they were resolv'd to stray,<lb/>
                And try the desert regions of <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Heaven was their sole protector while on the raging tide,<lb/>
                Kind fortune their director, and Providence their guide;<lb/>
                If I am not mistaken, about the <date>first of May</date>,<lb/>
                This voyage was undertaken for <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                If rightly I remember, this country to explore,<lb/>
                They landed in <date>November</date> on <placeName>Plymouth's</placeName> desert shore;<lb/>
                The <name type ="symbolic">savages</name> were frighten'd, with fear they fled away,<lb/>
                In peace our fathers settled this <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                We are their bold descendants, for liberty we'll fight,<lb/>
                The claim to independence we challenge as our right,<lb/>
                'Tis what kind Heaven gave us, then who shall take away?<lb/>
                Kind Heaven too can save us in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                We never will knock under, O <name type ="historical">George</name>, we do not fear<lb/>
                The rattling of your thunder, nor lightning of your spear;<lb/>
                Though rebels you declare us, we're strangers to dismay,<lb/>
                Therefore you cannot scare us in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                To what you have commanded we never will consent,<lb/>
                Although your troops are landed upon our continent;<lb/>
                We'll take our swords and muskets and march in dread array,<lb/>
                And drive the <name type ="nationality">British</name> <name type ="symbolic">red coats</name> from <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                We have a bold commander that fears not sword nor gun,<lb/>
                A second <name type ="historical">Alexander</name>, his name is <name type ="historical">WASHINGTON</name>,<lb/>
                His men are all collected and ready for the fray,<lb/>
                To fight they are directed for <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                We've <name type ="historical">Greene</name>, we've <name type ="historical">Gates</name> &amp; <name type ="historical">Putnam</name> to manage in the field,<lb/>
                A gallant train of footmen who'd rather die than yield;<lb/>
                A stately troop of horsemen, train'd in the martial way,<lb/>
                For to augment our forces in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Proud <name type ="historical">George</name>, you are engaged all in a dirty cause,<lb/>
                A cruel war you've waged repugnant to the laws;<lb/>
                Go tell the savage nations you're crueler than they,<lb/>
                To fight your own relations in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                I'll tell you, <name type ="historical">George</name>, in metre, if you'll attend a while,<lb/>
                We forced your <name type="titled">sir</name> <name type ="historical">Peter</name> from <name type ="historical">Sullivan's</name> fair isle;<lb/>
                At <placeName>Monmouth</placeName> town we gained the honors of the day,<lb/>
                A victory obtained in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                We truly were your betters hard by the <placeName>Brandywine</placeName>,<lb/>
                We led him fast in fetters whose name was <name type ="historical">John Burgoyne</name>,<lb/>
                We made your <name type ="historical">Howe</name> to tremble with terror and dismay,<lb/>
                True heroes we resemble in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Confusion to the <name type ="symbolic">tories</name>, that black infernal name,<lb/>
                In whom <placeName>Great Britain</placeName> glories, forever to their shame;<lb/>
                We'll send each foul revolter to smutty <placeName>Africa</placeName>,<lb/>
                Or noose them with a halter in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Here's health to all our footmen that handle sword and gun,<lb/>
                To <name type ="historical">Warren</name>, <name type ="historical">Gates</name> and <name type ="historical">Putnam</name>, and conq'ring <name type ="historical">Washington</name>,<lb/>
                Their names are wrote in letters which never shall decay,<lb/>
                Whilst sun and moon doth glitter in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Success unto our allies, in <placeName>Holland</placeName>, <placeName>France</placeName> and <placeName>Spain</placeName>,<lb/>
                Who arm'd their ships and gallies our freedom to maintain,<lb/>
                May they subdue the rancor of proud <name type ="symbolic">Britannia</name>,<lb/>
                And drive them from their anchors in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Success unto the Congress of these <placeName>United States</placeName>,<lb/>
                Who triumph in the conquest of <name type ="historical">Washington</name> and <name type ="historical">Gates</name>,<lb/>
                To all both land and seamen who glory in the day,<lb/>
                When we shall all be freemen in <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Success to legislation that rules with gentle hand,<lb/>
                To trade and navigation by water and by land;<lb/>
                May all of one opinion our wholesome laws obey,<lb/>
                Throughout the vast dominion of <placeName>North America</placeName>.<lb/></p>
