        <body>
             <p>
                 YE brave seamen all, where'er you be,<lb/>
                 Come hear of a battle late fought on the sea,<lb/>
                 To all true friends to our country we greet,<lb/>
                 Like us, may you beat all foes that you meet.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Our brave <name type ="titled">captain</name> <name type ="historical">HULL</name>, will rise to great fame,<lb/>
                Commands our ship, <name type ="ship">Constitution</name> by name;<lb/>
                We sail'd on a cruise, our shores to defend,<lb/>
                Hoping to take some good prize in the end.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                On the <date>20th of August</date>, as you may rely,<lb/>
                At the close of the day, a sail we did spy,<lb/>
                We then made all sail, for her we did steer,<lb/>
                Which prov'd to be the saucy <name type ="ship">Guerriere</name>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Three <name type ="nationality">English</name> colours she then did display,<lb/>
                We set our colours without more delay,<lb/>
                Then three cheers we gave, our flag to defend,<lb/>
                Told our <name type ="titled">officers</name> they could on us depend.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                "What ship is that?" then <name type ="historical">Dacres</name> he cry'd,<lb/>
                "The ship <name type ="ship">Constitution</name>!" our <name type ="titled">captain</name> reply'd.<lb/>
                "Pull down those colours so high in the air,<lb/>
                "And strike to <name type ="titled">his Majesty's</name> ship <name type ="ship">Guerriere</name>."<lb/></p>

            <p>
                "Not so! said our <name type ="titled">Captain</name>, I'd have you to know,<lb/>
                "I never will strike to so mean a foe."<lb/>
                The enemy's cannon loudly they roar'd,<lb/>
                Then we a good broadside into her pour'd.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Fight on my brave boys, our <name type ="titled">captain</name> did cry,<lb/>
                For we are resolv'd to Conquer or Die!<lb/>

                Firmly to your quarters let ev'ry man stand,<lb/>
                Let ev'ry gun with bold seamen be mann'd.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Ev'ry shot that we fir'd did very well tell,<lb/>
                Their masts shot away and overboard fell;<lb/>
                Their firing then ceas'd, no longer could fight,<lb/>
                In forty minutes time were put in this plight.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                To us they did strike, her colours pull'd down,<lb/>
                <name type ="titled">Captain</name> <name type ="historical">Dacres</name> was beat he fairly did own.<lb/>
                Her decks they presented a horrible sight,<lb/>
                Fifteen brave seamen was killed outright.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Sixty-two wounded men lay in their gore,<lb/>
                Ne'er was a ship had a worse drubbing before.<lb/>
                We all went to work when the battle was o'er,<lb/>
                In removing of all her baggage and stores.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                When to our ship the prisoners all came,<lb/>
                The prize was quitted and left in a flame,<lb/>
                Which quickly after blew up in the air,<lb/>
                Here then was the end of the ship <name type ="ship">Guerriere</name>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                In the harbour of <placeName>Boston</placeName> we're safely moor'd,<lb/>
                And brave <name type ="titled">Captain</name> <name type ="historical">Hull</name> by us all is ador'd.<lb/>
                Like true <name type ="nationality">Americans</name> our rights will defend,<lb/>
                And to our government we'll all be a friend.<lb/></p>

            <p>The <name type ="ship">Constitution</name> had 7 killed and 7 wounded.<lb/></p>
