        <body>
            <p>
                COME all you gallant heroes, of courage stout and bold,<lb/>
                Who scorn as long as life does last ever to be controul'd;<lb/>
                Give ear unto my ditty, for I the truth will tell,<lb/>
                Concerning many a soldier that for his country fell.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Brave <name type ="titled">General</name> <name type ="historical">Burgoyne</name> from <placeName>Canada</placeName> set sail,<lb/>
                With eight thousand brave <name type ="symbolic">Regulars</name>, he thought would never fail,<lb/>
                With <name type ="nationality">Indians</name> and <name type ="nationality">Canadians</name>, and <name type ="symbolic">Tories</name> as we hear,<lb/>
                Besides a fleet of shipping o'er <placeName>lake Champlain</placeName> did steer.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Before <placeName>Ticonderoga</placeName>, the <date>first day of July</date>,<lb/>
                Their fleet and army did appear and soon we did them spy:<lb/>
                Their motions we observed, full well both night and day,<lb/>
                And our brave boys prepared all for a bloody fray.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Our garrisons they view'd and straight their troops did land,<lb/>
                When <name type ="titled">General</name> <name type ="historical">St. Clair</name> he came to understand,<lb/>
                That the great <placeName>Mount Defiance</placeName> they then would fortify,<lb/>
                He found we must surrender or every man must die.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                It was on <date>July fifth</date> that we had orders to retreat,<lb/>
                And the next morning left our forts, <name type ="historical">Burgoyne</name> he thought us beat,<lb/>
                And closely did pursue us, it was near to <placeName>Hubbard Town</placeName>,<lb/>
                Our rear guards he defeated, which he thought great renown.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                When our Congress came to hear that we our forts had left,<lb/>
                And that we had retreated near <placeName>Albany</placeName> to rest:<lb/>
                Brave <name type ="titled">General</name> <name type ="historical">Gates</name> they sent us our country to retrieve,<lb/>
                With shouts and acclamations, with joy we him receive.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                <name type ="historical">Burgoyne</name> sent out a party of fifteen hundred men,<lb/>
                With <name type ="nationality">Hessians</name> and <name type ="nationality">Canadians</name> came near to <placeName>Bennington</placeName>,<lb/>
                With <name type ="symbolic">Savages</name> and <name type ="symbolic">Tories</name>, our cattle for to steal,<lb/>
                Commanded by a <name type ="symbolic">Tory</name>, they call'd him <name type ="titled">Colonel</name> <name type ="historical">Skeen</name>.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Brave <name type ="historical">Gates</name> our bold <name type ="titled">commander</name>, hearing of <name type ="historical">Skeen's</name> conduct,<lb/>
                He sent out a small party his march for to obstruct;<lb/>
                We took all their artillery, and <name type ="historical">Skeen</name> his fate may mourn,<lb/>
                For of fifteen hundred men, scarce five hundred did return.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                <name type ="historical">Burgoyne</name> then finding out that his schemes would not succeed,<lb/>
                He then with his artillery and army did proceed,<lb/>
                Thinking for to frighten us and make us for to fly,<lb/>
                Soon he found out his mistake, he found we'd sooner die.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The <date>fifteenth of September</date>, the morning fair and clear,<lb/>
                Brave <name type ="historical">Gates</name> he said unto his men, my boys be of good cheer,<lb/>
                <name type ="historical">Burgoyne</name> he now advances, and we will never fly,<lb/>
                But to maintain our country's right, we'll fight until we die.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The news was quickly brought us, their army it was near,<lb/>
                And our brave boys did meet them, all without dread or fear,<lb/>
                It was about Stillwater, we met about noon day,<lb/>
                And quickly you shall hear my boys, began a bloody fray.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                We fought them full six hours like valiant hearts of gold,<lb/>
                Each party scorn'd for to give way, we fought like <name type ="nationality">Britons</name> bold,<lb/>
                Until the leaves with blood were stain'd our <name type ="titled">General</name> then did cry.<lb/>
                It is diamond cut diamond, fight on utnil we die.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The night being coming on, to our lines we did retreat,<lb/>
                Which made the <name type ="nationality">Britons</name> for to think our army it was beat,<lb/>
                But early the next morning they beheld before their eyes,<lb/>
                We were ready to engage again, which did them much surprise.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Then fighting they seem'd tired of, therefore to work they go,<lb/>
                To bury all their dead, and intrenchments up they throw,<lb/>
                Thinking thereby with shot and shells our army to destroy,<lb/>
                But <name type ="historical">Gates</name> he kept such orders that we did them defy.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                They began a cannonading from every mountain hill,<lb/>
                And our brave boys return'd the same, and with a right good will,<lb/>
                And then they threw both shot and shells enough to terrify<lb/>
                Our hearts had we been <name type ="historical">Cæsars</name>, yet neither part would fly.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                The great Almighty <name type ="mythological">God</name> he inspir'd great <name type ="historical">Gates's</name> mind,<lb/>
                To send out <name type ="titled">General</name> <name type ="historical">Arnold</name> to see if he could find,<lb/>
                A passage through the enemy, and make them for to flee,<lb/>
                Which he at last completed and set our country free.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                They burned all their baggage they fled with haste and fear,<lb/>
                And up to <placeName>Saratoga</placeName>, <name type ="historical">Burgoyne</name> with his troops did steer;<lb/>
                Brave <name type ="historical">Gates</name> our bold <name type="titled">commander</name> soon after him did hie,<lb/>
                Resolving for to take them or every man to die.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Then soon we overtook them, it was near to <placeName>Saratogue</placeName>,<lb/>
                Which they had burnt, as they had done all houses on their road,<lb/>
                The <date>sixteenth of O&amp;tober</date> was forc'd to capitulate,<lb/>
                <name type ="historical">Burgoyne</name> and all his army they were our prisoners made.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                As for the <name type ="nationality">British</name> soldiers, they fought like hearts of gold,<lb/>
                And scorn'd as long as life does last ever to be control'd;<lb/>
                But as for the proud <name type ="nationality">Hessians</name> they prov'd cowardly of late<lb/>
                For they refus'd to fight us, which caused their defeat.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                Here's a health unto our army, and our <name type ="titled">commander</name> <name type ="historical">Gates</name>,<lb/>
                To <name type ="historical">WASHINGTON</name> and <name type ="historical">Lincoln</name>, but all the <name type ="symbolic">tories</name> hate:<lb/>
                Likewise unto the CONGRESS, <name type ="mythological">God</name> send them long to reign,<lb/>
                To do our country justice, our rights for to maintain.<lb/></p>

            <p>
                So to conclude my ditty, my song is at an end,<lb/>
                I hope no bold <name type ="nationality">American</name> will slight what I have penn'd,<lb/>
                Our cause is just, in <name type ="mythological">God</name> we trust, therefore my boys ne'er fear,<lb/>
                Brave <name type ="historical">Gates</name> will clear <placeName>America</placeName> before another year.<lb/></p>
