        <p><name type ="titled">Captain </name><name type="historical">Paul Jones</name> of the ship <rs type="ship">Poor Richard</rs><lb />
        of 40 guns, took an <name type ="nationality">English </name>ship called<lb />
        the <rs type="ship">Serapis </rs>of 44, and the <rs type="ship">Lion </rs>a 20 gun<lb />

        <p>AN <name type ="nationality">American </name>frigate, a frigate of fame,<lb />
        With guns mounted forty, the <rs type="ship">Richard </rs>by name,<lb />
For to cruise in the channel of old <placeName>England</placeName>,<lb />
        And a valiant commander, <name type="historical">Paul Jones</name> is the man.<lb /></p>

<p>We had not sail'd long before we did espy<lb />
        A large forty-four, and a twenty so nigh,<lb />
With fifty bold seamen well laid in with store,<lb />
        In comfort pursu'd us from the old <name type ="nationality">English </name>shore.<lb /></p>

        <p>About twelve at noon <name type="historical">Percy </name>came along side,<lb />
With a speaking trumpet, whence came you ? he cry'd,<lb />
Its now gave an answer, I hail'd you before,<lb />
Or this moment a broadside into you I'll pour.<lb /></p>

        <p><name type="historical">Paul Jones</name> then he says to his men every one,<lb />
Let ev'ry bold seaman stand true to his gun ;<lb />
We'll receive a broadside from these bold English men,<lb />
        And like true <name type ="symbolic">yankee </name>heroes return in again.<lb /></p>

<p>The contest was bloody, both decks ran with gore,<lb />
The sea seem'd to blaze when the cannons did roar ;<lb />
        Fight on my brave boys, then <name type="historical">Paul Jones</name> he cry'd,<lb />
We will soon humble this bold <name type ="nationality">Englishman's </name>pride.<lb /></p>

<p>Stand firm to your quarters, your duty don't shun,<lb />
The first man that quits them, thro' his body I'll run,<lb />
Tho' their force is superior, yet they shall know<lb />
        What true brave <name type ="nationality">American </name>seamen can do.<lb /></p>

<p>we fought them eight glasses, eight glasses so hot,<lb />
Till seventy bold seamen lay dead on the spot,<lb />
Any ninety bold seamen lay bleeding in their gore,<lb />
while the pieces of cannon most wretched did roar.<lb /></p>

        <p>Our gunner in fright to <name type="historical">Paul Jones</name> he came,<lb />
we make water quite fast, and our side's in a flame ;<lb />
Then brave <name type="historical">Jones </name>he said in the height of his pride,<lb />
If we can't do no better boys sink along side.<lb /></p>

        <p>The <rs type="ship">Lion </rs>bore down while the <rs type="ship">Richard </rs>did rake,<lb />
        which caused the heart of poor <name type="historical">Percy </name>to ake ;<lb />
Our shot flew so hot they cou'd not stand us long,<lb />
'Till the undaunted union of <placeName>Britain</placeName>came down.<lb /></p>

<p>To us they did strike, their colors pull'd down ;<lb />
The fame of <name type="historical">Paul Jones</name> will be heard with renown ;<lb />
His name will be rank'd among heroes so brave,<lb />
who fought like a freeman our country to save.<lb /></p>

<p>Now all you brave seamen whoever you be,<lb />
who hear of this battle that's fought on the sea,<lb />
May you all do like them, when call'd to the same,<lb />
And your names be enroll'd on the pages of fame.<lb /></p>

<p>Your country will boast of Tars that's so brave,<lb />
And to you she will look in dangers to save ;<lb />
She'll call you dear Sons, your names they will shine,<lb />
And about your brave brows bright laurels entwine.<lb /></p>

<p>So now my brave boys we have taken a prize,<lb />
        A large forty-four, and a twenty likewise ;<lb />
Then <name type ="religious">God </name>bless the mother, that cause has to weep<lb />
For the loss of her son in the ocean so deep.<lb /></p>

        <p><name type="historical">STERRET's </name>Sea Fight.<lb /></p>

<p>STAND to your guns my hearts of oak,<lb />
Let not a word on board be spoke,<lb />
Victory soon will crown the joke ;<lb />
Be silent and be ready.<lb />
Ram down your guns and spunge them well,<lb />
Let us be sure that the balls will tell,<lb />
The cannons' roar shall sound their knell;<lb />
Be steady boys, be steady.<lb /></p>

        <p>Not yet, nor yet--reserve your fire,<lb />
        Says brave <name type="historical">Sterret</name>--Fire !<lb />
        And sink those <name type ="symbolic">Moorish </name>Tropolines,<lb />
All were amaz'd who beheld the scenes,<lb />
        A broadside my boys.<lb /></p>

        <p>See the blood in purple tide,<lb />
        Trick down her batter'd side ;<lb />
        wing'd with fate the bullets fly,<lb />
        Conquer boys--or bravely die,<lb />
Be steady and defend your rights,<lb />
        She's silent-huzza !<lb />
        To <name type ="symbolic">Columbia's </name>flag she strikes.<lb /></p>
