             <p>
                 YE heroes who bled for the rights of mankind,<lb/>
                 Whose virtues and valor by freedom are shrin'd,<lb/>
                 In the hearts of your sons---we swear by your fame,<lb/>
                 That we never will tarnish our country's bright name.<lb/>
                 <emph rend="italic">For <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name> still generous and brave, just and free,<lb/>

            <p>
                Long time had our rights been by <name type ="nationality">Britain</name> disdain'd,<lb/>
                <emph rend="italic">T</emph>here rights which our father's so nobly maintain'd;<lb/>
                Our commerce the freebooters seiz'd as their prey,<lb/>
                And hawk-like maliciously bore it away.<lb/>
                <emph rend="italic">Yet <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name> still generous and brave, just and free,<lb/>

            <p>
                Our Eagle in peace, as mild as a dove,<lb/>
                With anger look'd down from the mountain above,<lb/>
                And beheld <name type ="nationality">Britain's</name> Lion lie crouching to spring,<lb/>
                So to pounce on his <name type ="titled">Lordship</name> she quickly took wing.<lb/>

                For battle prepar'd, and united as one,<lb/>
                Our seamen so brave soon repair'd to the main,<lb/>
                Resolv'd from the enemy glory to gain.<lb/>
                <emph rend="italic">And <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name>-still generous and brave, just and free,<lb/>

            <p>
                Brave <name type ="historical">HULL</name> and his crew bid defiance to fear,<lb/>
                And soon did the job for their spanking <name type ="ship">Guerriere</name>;<lb/>

            <p>
                Now <name type ="historical">DECATUR</name>, of heroes the pride and the boast,<lb/>
                And the terror of old crazy <name type ="titled">king</name> <name type ="historical">George's</name> host,<lb/>
                With a tight little frigate and true <name type ="symbolic">Yankee</name> crew,<lb/>

                <emph rend="italic">For <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name> still generous and brave, just and free,<lb/>

            <p>
                Not long had they cruis'd ere a frigate of size,<lb/>
                Majestically sailing, attracted their eyes;<lb/>
                To quarters each brave <name type ="symbolic">Yankee</name> <name type ="symbolic">tar</name> quickly hied,<lb/>
                And managed it soon to come up along side.<lb/>

            <p>
                Now the battle commenc'd, and so fast play'd each gun<lb/>
                <emph rend="italic">T</emph>hat the <name type ="nationality">British</name> <name type ="symbolic">poor devils</name> tho't the fight was quite done<lb/>
                For the fire from her sides was so brilliant and bright,<lb/>
                <emph rend="italic">T</emph>hey imagined our ship in a blaze made the light.<lb/>
                <emph rend="italic">For <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name> still generous and brave, just and free,<lb/>

            <p>
                But soon they found out 'twas a shocking mistake,<lb/>
                For the shot still continued their vessel to rake,<lb/>
                And thinking 'twas best to knock under quite soon,<lb/>
                Their piece of red flannel they quickly haul'd down.<lb/>
                <emph rend="italic">Then <name type ="symbolic">Columbia</name> still generous and brave, just and free,<lb/>

            <p>
                Now Huzza for <name type ="historical">DECATUR</name>, and all his brave crew,<lb/>
                They will ne'er be ashamed their colors to shew:<lb/>
                While a frigate of <placeName>Britatin</placeName> on the ocean shall lie,<lb/>
                They will always be ready to give 'em a try,<lb/>
