        <body>
        <p>
        COME listen to my story the truth I will unfold,<lb />
        Concerning of a frigate, she was man'd with hearts of gold,<lb />
        We took a cruize from <placeName>Boston</placeName>, as you shall understand,<lb />
        For to maintain the freedom of our own native land.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        We took a new <name type="titled">Commandor</name>, and <name type="historical">Bainbridge</name>  was his name,<lb />
        <emph rend="italic">O</emph>ur lot it was to have him, we could not deny the same,<lb />
        He proved a <name type="titled">Commander</name> that was both firm and true,<lb />
        You shall find in the story of the <name type ="ship">Constitution's</name> crew.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        <emph rend="italic">O</emph>n the <date>27th of October</date>, as you shall understand,<lb />
        We steered for an <placeName>Island</placeName>, it was called <placeName>Ferdinand</placeName>;<lb />
        All for to water ship my boys, and then to sail away,<lb />
        Unto the <placeName>Brazil</placeName> coast, to beat our daring enemy.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        <emph rend="italic">O</emph>n the <date>29th of December</date>, being early in the day,<lb />
        A frigate bore down on us, she was called the <name type ="ship">JAVA</name>;<lb />
        We took her to be a seventy-four, and from them bore away,<lb />
        Thinking the <name type="nationality">English</name> Squadron to the windward of us lay.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        At eleven o'clock, we made the signal of the day,<lb />
        Being not directly answered, 'twas then we bore away,<lb />
        At twelve we made more sail my boys, but from them we did go,<lb />
        But our desire was to be alongside of our most daring foe.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        <emph rend="italic">O</emph>ur ensign and pendant we hoisted to let them understand,<lb />
        They hoisted their colors, they were them of old <placeName>England</placeName>;<lb />
        With their union jack being hoisted, it was their <name type="nationality">British</name> pride,<lb />
        Which they were forc'd to strike to us, or sink along our side.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        'Twas one when we perceived she was a single deck ship,<lb />
        It being our intention their <name type="nationality">British</name> bones to rip;<lb />
        We gave to them three cheers, and then the fray begun,<lb />
        Each loyal hearted seaman then serving at his gun.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        It was little after she attempted to rake us,<lb />
        But we being not inclined to let them serve us thus;<lb />
        We giving them a broadside, which made them haul their wind,<lb />
        To meet such a reception, they were not much inclin'd.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        It was at two o'clock the bloody fray begun,<lb />
        Each hardy <name type ="symbolic">tar</name> and <name type ="symbolic">son of <name type ="mythological">mars</name></name>, was active at his gun,<lb />
        Until their fore and mizen-mast was fairly shot away,<lb />
        And with redoubled courage, we gave them three huzzas.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        Her mainmast it was standing, and to windward of us lay,<lb />
        And on that stick her union jack, to us they did display,<lb />
        Her hull was sadly battered, and they being badly maul'd,<lb />
        Unto the <name type ="ship">Constitution</name>, down her main-jack soon she haul'd.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        Our <name type="titled">Commodore</name> at seeing that she had her colors struck,<lb />
        He wished to every officer the bravest and best of luck;<lb />
        Likewise to every seaman that was both firm and true,<lb />
        Here's to brave <name type="titled">Commodore</name> <name type="historical">Bainbridge</name> &amp; the <name type ="ship">Constitution's</name> crew,<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        Two hours and three quarters, we engaged very hot,<lb />
        Until one hundred and four poor <name type="nationality">Britons</name>, lay dead upon the spot,<lb />
        Which made them think the <name type ="symbolic">Yankees</name> could shew them fair play,<lb />
        And made them strike the union, on the close of that great day.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        Come all you royal <name type="nationality">Englishmen</name>, the truth of you I'll tell,<lb />
        If you can beat the <name type="nationality">French</name>, we you can beat as well,<lb />
        For it ne'er shall be recorded, that <name type="nationality">Americans</name> shall fly,<lb />
        Great <name type="historical">Washington</name> he made us free, and we'll still be free or die.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        Come all of our brave citizens, your tribute to us bring,<lb />
        For this gallant atchievement, in this great and glorious thing,<lb />
        We can beat all our enemys, like lions that is stout,<lb />
        So come fill the can brave fellows, and let us drink it out.<lb />
        </p>

        <p>
        Here's to our wives &amp; sweethearts, for whom we fought for fame,<lb />
        And when the lisping children shall sing forth their father's name,<lb />
        And the pretty girls of every stamp, what more then can we do?<lb />
        So may success attend those heroes of the <name type ="ship">Constitution's</name> crew.<lb />
