The Connecticut engraver John Warner Barber dramatically illustrated this in 'A Miniature of the World' in the 19th Century, an imaginatively designed engraving published in Hartford in 1826. In the upper right, a righteous few travel the straight road that leads to the “River of Death” and eternal salvation in the heavenly “New Jerusalem” beyond.  Many others succumb to entrapments on the way, including a harlot’s cottage.  The majority of figures, mostly male, occupy a ragged precipice above the fires of Hell in the lower left foreground. The doomed crowd includes robbers and murderers, gluttons and drunkards, religious skeptics and dissenters, and those consumed by avarice, pride, and other deadly sins.
