Ultimately, drink led to ruin and death. Another account in Oliver & Brother’s Pictorial Temperance Almanac for 1850 tells the story of “The Suicide Father.” In this pathetic scene, a son finds his father lying dead on the floor, a gun beside him, a bottle and glass on the table. The clothing and furniture indicate that this was a prosperous home, now bereft and probably bankrupt, because of the sins of the father.
