Temperance societies were formed to combat the evil and restore society to some semblance of equilibrium and order. Some of the early temperance societies took a lenient view of moderate drinking and directed their crusade against strong spirits and excessive indulgence, but, eventually, most of the temperance movement embraced total abstinence as the only way to avoid a gradual, insidious decline into full blown alcoholism. For this reason, temperance advocates warned against combining alcohol with the sociable pastime of smoking and conversation, as shown on the 1836 sheet music cover of Think & Smoke Tobacco.
