Proceedings of the Democratic Convention held at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, January 8, 1828.

Description

Eagle-eyed collector Bill Cook noticed this sixteen-page pamphlet of Proceedings of the Democratic Convention in an auction catalog and immediately contacted the AAS curatorial staff to see if the item was of interest. Additional financial assistance from Mr. Cook allowed the Society to secure it at auction for a very reasonable price.

The 1828 convention reported on in these Proceedings dates from the birth of the Democratic Party. In fact, it contains one of the earliest uses of the phrase Democratic Party to refer to the pro-Jacksonian faction. Among the business of the convention, it was resolved to endorse the ticket of Jackson and Calhoun and political tracts were ordered to be printed.
